Reasons to Have a Mole Removed

Get the facts about having a mole removed.

Okay so maybe finding out that you need to have a mole removed wasn’t exactly what you expected to hear from our Omaha, Columbus and Papillion, NE, dermatologist Dr. Herschel Stoller; however, there are many reasons someone may benefit from mole removal. Of course, you probably want to know what to expect from the mole removal process so there are no surprises. No problem! You’ve come to the right place.

Reasons to Have a Mole Removed

One of the main reasons people turn to our Omaha, NE, dermatologist Dr. Stoller for mole removal is because of skin cancer. Both melanoma and non-melanoma lesions will need to be removed as soon as possible to prevent cancer from spreading; however, while skin cancer is one of the most common reasons for mole removal, it isn’t the only one.

Other people may choose to have a mole removed if it’s in an awkward or annoying area (think, bra line or groin) or for purely cosmetic reasons. In these instances, our Omaha, Columbus and Papillion, NE, dermatologist can also remove the mole.

You should also know when to see our Omaha, NE, for a screening. If a mole changes in appearance it’s probably a good idea to play it safe and to schedule an appointment with us. You may also need to have the mole removed if it,

  • Burns or itches
  • Bleeds
  • Oozes
  • Crusts over
  • Is new (and you’re over 30 years old)
  • Is painful

Mole Removal: What to Expect

Mole removal is a fairly standard procedure, but a lot will depend on the reason for removing the mole. If the mole is healthy and non-cancerous, then we will simply numb the area with local anesthesia and either excise or shave away the mole; however, if the mole is cancerous, we may recommend surgical excision of it. If you have any questions about the mole removal process, don’t hesitate to ask our Omaha, NE, dermatologist during your pre-op appointment.
