Taking Care of Your Skin

Your skin is an important part of you. Healthy skin helps enhance your appearance, and it protects you from bacteria and infections. First, it’s important to look at the basics of skincare for all skin types. A basic skincare routine needs to include:

  • Washing with mild cleansing products, not soap, at least once each day
  • Gently patting your skin and leaving a little moisture on your skin
  • Using a toner without alcohol, which can dry your skin
  • Applying moisturizer with a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 to protect and hydrate your skin

Now, let’s look at the seven different skin types and how to modify the basic routine to fit your skin:

  • For normal skin, the basic skincare routine should work well
  • For oily skin, you can use cleansers to limit excess oil, and toners for oily skin
  • For dehydrated skin, you can use cleansing milks and hydrating toners, and moisturizers
  • For combination skin, the basic skincare routine should work well
  • For acne-prone skin, use cleansers to unblock pores, exfoliating scrubs to slough excess skin cells, and acne prevention toners and moisturizers
  • For sensitive skin, use mild cleansing products and toners and moisturizers specifically for sensitive skin, avoiding retinol products
  • For mature skin, you can use hydrating cleansers and toners, and thick, anti-aging moisturizers

These are a few other tips and considerations to keep in mind as you develop your skincare routine:

  • Always clean makeup off your face before you go to bed
  • Always wear an SPF sunscreen of 50 or higher, if you have fair skin or sunburn easily
  • Always use thicker moisturizer cream to lock in moisture if you live in a dry climate
  • Always use non-comedogenic products that won’t clog your pores
  • Always use products to boost collagen production and hydration if you have mature skin

Remember to drink lots of water to keep your skin and body hydrated, especially when you are active. Eat a healthy diet full of vegetables and fruits, and limit salt and sugar intake.
