When To Consider Getting a Mole Removed

What Are Moles?

Moles are common skin growths composed of a pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. These can appear anywhere on the skin's surface and vary in size and shape. While most moles are harmless, some can undergo changes, which can sometimes indicate skin cancer.

Regular skin examinations and mole removal are common skin services offered by Dr. Herschel Stoller at The Center of Dermatology, with offices in Columbus, Papillion and Omaha, NE.

When To Consider Mole Removal

If a mole's appearance changes in color, size, shape or texture, it's worth getting checked out by a doctor. In addition to this, any moles with an asymmetrical shape or irregular border should be checked as well, along with moles larger than 6 millimeters.

If a mole is causing you discomfort, itching, irritation or bleeding, it should be checked out and possibly removed.

You might also choose to have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons, or if it's in an area prone to friction or injury.

Dr. Stoller at The Center of Dermatology has a full range of skin services, including skin checks and mole removal. There are offices in Columbus, Papillion and Omaha, NE.

Types of Mole Removal

Dr. Stoller offers two types of mole removal techniques:

  • A surgical shave - the area will be numbed and the doctor cuts around the mole and underneath it. This is usually used for smaller moles and no suturing is required.
  • A surgical excision - the area is numbed and the doctors cuts out the mole with a punching instrument. This technique requires stitches and may be used for larger or more complex moles.
